Day 2 is drawing to a close. So far so good, although it's hard to feel like I can't just go out and run errands in town, as I normally do. And I am in mourning the fact that we may not be able to enjoy another pub visit for a long, long while. All three of us (Emma included) really enjoy English pubs.

Yesterday Emma and I made a carrot cake from one of my favorite baking websites:
https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/super-moist-carrot-cake/.  Delicious! Richard and I have both been on a bit of a diet for the past couple months, and eating one piece of cake made us feel slightly sick. But it sure tasted good going down.

We took a walk this morning and played some frisbee near our house. Spring has truly sprung here. People are definitely still out and about, but we didn't go into town, so perhaps it is less busy there.

This afternoon, Emma and I worked on a puzzle for a bit. She did some homework, played Minecraft with friends in South Carolina, and worked on a Scratch project (for those who don't know, Scratch is a programming language that's used by many children to create fun games and animations).

At Richard's suggestion, we had a virtual dinner date with our friends in Warsaw. Through the miracle of technology (Skype) we were able to eat together and socialize. It was a great success and something we will do more of in the coming weeks and months. In a moment we are going to finish the board game we started last night (Settlers of Catan -- great game).

I do feel that a schedule is crucial. We aren't sticking to it 100%, and it will need to be tweaked, but without it time can seem a little endless.

Finally, in the good new category: the yoga center that I love is moving all its classes online. I am very much hoping that my favorite class -- taught by a woman in her 80s (she is amazing) -- will be on offer. Fingers crossed.

Thinking of all of you each day....

  1. What a wonderful guest blog post on Dinky Doors. Wonderful package of words and photos on an entirely whimsical, highly interesting subject. Well done in every way, Emma.

Starting Week 7 of our quarantine here in Cambridge. I had to ask Richard what week it was, as everything is blurring together. Things continue much the same here for us. Richard's work has not really been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. He and I continue to work with Emma on math and English, so that she gets at least 2 hours of schoolwork per day. Emma continues to enjoy playing Minecraft with family and friends. In short, we are trying to stave off boredom and anxiety as best we can. Spring is in full force in England and the bluebells are now in bloom. Bluebells are England's most famous woodland flower and they bloom for just a few weeks each spring. If you look at them closely, they are more purple than blue. Going for a walk in a bluebell wood has long been a popular pastime in the UK. To wit: take a look at this London Underground poster from the 1930s. As the weather has been so lovely here, we went in search of bluebells this past weekend. The...
Now into Week 8 of lockdown. We are trying to fight the good fight against boredom, anxiety, and fear. Some days are better than others. On weekdays we continue with our daily routine of schoolwork, Zoom calls, arts and crafts, and TV programs (or, for Emma, Youtube videos). There is enough going on that the days feel relatively full. There is also some variability. On Tuesdays Emma and I watch a children's astronomy session on Youtube. This is a live presentation by the Institute of Astronomy Cambridge and it's excellent. On Tuesday afternoons Emma has art club. On Wednesdays she takes an online Minecraft course called "Exploring Ancient Civilizations." On Thursday mornings she has ukulele club. And on Friday afternoons she does a yoga class. Weekends are harder for us, as we ditch the schoolwork and therefore our daily routine. This past Saturday we went for a 12 mile bike ride to Wandlebury Country Park, a place we'd never been before and knew nothing a...
The roses have been unbelievably gorgeous this spring. They have really made my life a little bit happier. So today I am just going to post some photos I've taken over the past few weeks. Enjoy.
